Production Boats Hurricane Sloop
The Hurricane is a
classic redesign of the Alberg Typhoon by Merv Hammatt.
This gaff sloop rig has the classic good looks of an early 20th
century yacht. The boat has been redrawn to replace the full
keel with a centerboard housed in the shallow keel reducing
the draft to 20"and clearing the cockpit of a centerboard trunk.
To lower the center of effort, a low gaff rig has been designed.
The cockpit has been opened up and lengthened to a full 11',
providing comfortable room for up to 6 adults with plenty of
storage area. The trailerable Hurricane carries 850 pounds
of internal lead ballast, making her feel and sail like a 25
footer.
The oiled teak coamings, rub rails and interior trim of the
Hurricane's large open cockpit reminds us of a more relaxed
earlier time when day sailing meant morning sails, picnics and
teaching children boat handling. All this plus the low maintenance
of a modern fiberglass hull - the best of all sailing worlds
in one package.
